Introduction to Better Business Cases

The Better Business Cases Practitioner course introduces a systematic and objective approach to developing robust business cases. Aligned with HM Treasury’s Green Book guidance, this course complements established practices for effective financial decision-making. It equips learners with the essential knowledge to confidently structure business cases that demonstrate value, accountability, and feasibility.

The Five Case Model explained

Central to the course is The Five Case Model, recognised as the UK government’s best practice for planning spending proposals. The model offers a step-by-step methodology to structure business cases by focusing on key elements: identifying the case for change, setting clear objectives, exploring potential solutions, and establishing delivery arrangements. This ensures business cases achieve an optimal balance of benefits, costs, and risks.

Building effective business cases

The course covers the lifecycle of a business case, including understanding the relationships between its components. Participants learn to articulate the need for intervention, define clear investment objectives, evaluate diverse solutions, and establish mechanisms to support successful delivery. Through this structured framework, learners can confidently create business cases that address organisational needs and priorities.
