What you'll learn

The MoP Practitioner course provides a practical understanding of portfolio management principles, enabling you to create a portfolio that maximises resources, aligns with organisational strategy and balances change initiatives with standard day-to-day activities. Gain hands-on skills for project prioritisation, governance, and stakeholder engagement.

Portfolio Definition Cycle

The Portfolio Definition Cycle establishes the initial groundwork for successful portfolio management. This cycle includes processes such as identifying, prioritising, and balancing projects and programmes within a portfolio to ensure they align with organisational strategy. Key activities involve assessing potential investments, determining portfolio priorities, and securing approvals. By focusing on strategic alignment and resource allocation, the definition cycle sets up the portfolio to deliver maximum value.

Portfolio Delivery Cycle

The Portfolio Delivery Cycle ensures that all projects and programmes within the portfolio stay on track to meet organisational objectives. This cycle focuses on monitoring, adjusting, and supporting projects throughout their lifecycle. It includes managing dependencies, maintaining alignment with strategic goals, and adjusting resource allocation as needed. This ongoing oversight helps to maintain a cohesive, value-driven portfolio, enabling continuous benefit realisation and effective risk management.

Roles and Documentation

Effective portfolio management relies on defined roles and responsibilities, supported by essential documentation. Key roles include the Portfolio Manager, responsible for overseeing portfolio performance; Business Change Managers, who ensure programme benefits are realised; and senior leadership, who provide strategic direction. Supporting documentation, such as portfolio strategy documents, business cases, and risk logs, ensures transparency and accountability, enabling informed decision-making and structured governance throughout the portfolio’s lifecycle.
