The world of project management doesn’t stand still, and neither should your skillset. The AgilePM® framework has long been a trusted guide for project professionals looking to manage projects with greater flexibility. With the release of AgilePM version 3, the framework has been significantly updated to reflect the latest thinking in agile project delivery and leadership.

The evolution of AgilePM

First launched in 2010, AgilePM quickly became one of the most widely adopted frameworks for agile project management, but the working world has changed since then. In 2014 AgilePM v2 launched as an extension of the framework, to address challenges such as faster delivery cycles and increasingly complex projects, as well as evolving expectations around leadership and collaboration. However, the industry now demands a further evolution towards a more modern, human-centric approach.

Version 3 is the result of years of feedback from practitioners and trainers, combined with the latest trends in agile project management as tracked by the Agile Business Consortium. The result is a framework that stays true to its roots while embracing the reality of today’s project environments.

What’s new in AgilePM v3?

The changes in version 3 are more than cosmetic. This is a major refresh that redefines what agile project leadership looks like in 2025 and beyond.

The key updates include:

A shift from output to outcomes

AgilePM now places greater emphasis on delivering value, not just completing tasks. The framework encourages teams to align their efforts with business outcomes and stakeholder needs. The former Post-Project phase is now known as Realisation, reflecting a focus on benefits that extend beyond delivery.

From management to leadership

Project managers are now positioned as agile leaders, managing more than time and scope against cost. AgilePM v3 introduces updated guidance on project leadership, including principles for empowering teams, encouraging collaboration and focusing on shared goals. The role of a project manager is reframed to support, inspire and lead rather than just control.

People over processes

The update embraces a more human approach, shifting attention away from rigid processes and documentation, and focusing instead on collaboration, communication and problem-solving. Clear roles and responsibilities remain, but the emphasis is on empowering teams to work creatively and flexibly.

Integration of Scrum

Scrum is now fully embedded within the AgilePM framework as the core engine for product delivery at the team level. With familiar terminology such as Sprint Backlogs and Scrum Masters now part of the language, the update aligns closely with real-world agile practices, making it easier for teams already using Scrum to adopt AgilePM as a broader project delivery framework.

Support for multi-team projects

As projects become more complex and involve multiple teams, the new course includes enhanced guidance for coordinating and planning across teams. Whether scaling across departments or delivering enterprise-level initiatives, the framework supports agile delivery at scale.

A better learning experience

One of the standout features of the update is the redesigned training and assessment approach. Candidates can expect a more interactive learning experience with new, immersive simulations and a consistent, real-world case study used throughout. A simplified, scenario-based exam now underpins the qualification. The aim is to help learners not only understand agile concepts but apply them with confidence in the workplace.

AgilePM exam changes: What you need to know

While the exam structure remains broadly the same, multiple-choice for Foundation, and objective-testing format for Practitioner, the content has been refreshed to reflect the updated syllabus.

Foundation-level candidates will explore both agile fundamentals and Scrum essentials, while Practitioner-level learners will apply their knowledge in realistic, scenario-based challenges.

All training is based on the new AgilePM Reference Book, available now in English, with additional translations planned throughout 2025.
